Captured Curls: Chelsi

Please, introduce yourself!
My Name is Chelsi Hilton I am an inspiring model, designer, and actor. I have a daughter named London who is Four years old and I am a college student as well.

What is your current hair care regimen?
My current regimen is that I take some pills that help my hair grow at the first of every month. I wash my hair also once a week. My hair has been growing pretty good as well. It comes almost down to the middle of my back.

What is your hair type and what works best for your texture?
My hair type right now is straightened style that is flat iron and it’s kind of bouncy. What works best my texture is natural oils and a good natural shampoo it does the trick. Since I have been doing this going on for 2-3 years I truly haven’t had a bad time with my hair at all.

What reaction did you get when you first decided to go natural?
The reaction was great, a lot of people around me wanted to eventually go natural. I have inspired a lot of people as well; everywhere I go people always love the natural look and want to try it for themselves.

Did you BC or transition, if so when or for how long?
I didn’t do a big chop, I just made the transition. Just trying new ways and always researching online about better ways to keep my hair healthy and making sure it gets the right vitamins as well. I keep transition all the time, and staying on top making sure my hair gets all the correct attention it needs.

What makes you love your kinks, curls and coils?
What makes me love my kinks, curls and coils is that my style is very versatile. Weather I wear it curly or flat iron it straight I look like a total new person every time. I have had an amazing journey with my hair and I'm always trying new ways and doing more research to keep it natural and healthy.

Captured Curls: Jillz

So, I have been trying to get this cool chick on my blog for a while and she is FINALLY featured! Jillz is a very talented young lady with awesome curls and style. I hope you all enjoy her story as much as I did, enjoy!

Please, introduce yourself!
I'm Jillz but mostly known as Elle Maxwell (the lyricist). I'm a student, optimist, and most importantly an artist. Currently residing in Southeast, Washington, DC I'm trying to figure out where I fit into the script for this play called "Life".

What is your current hair care regimen?
My current hair regimen differs depending on which way I'm wearing my hair. Now that my hair is at a nice length since I went natural (again), I wear it straight majority of the time. When I do wear it this way I usually just wash with Creme of Nature Sunflower and Coconut Detangling Conditioning Shampoo, condition with Cantu Shea Butter Rinse Out Conditioner, then put Carol's Daughter Hair Balm on my hair (just a little) before I blow dry it and flat iron it. I don't like applying too much heat to my hair than needed so to keep up my style I either pin curl it or just wear a satin bonnet at night. My hair is also naturally thin so I tend to lean more towards the satin bonnet. It gives my hair a bump on the morning.

When my hair is in its natural state I wash with the Cream of Nature shampoo, condition with Cantu, then put on Creme of Nature Lemongrass & Rosemary Leave-in Creme Conditioner. To keep my curls I just add a layer of Shea Moisture Organic Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Style Milk.

What is your hair type and what works best for your texture?
I think some parts of my hair may be curlier than others but for the most part my hair type is 3c/4a. I find that the above products that I mentioned work best for my hair. Sometimes I may add a little Eco Styler Gel to the mix for my more natural/curly look or Curl Soufflé Medium Curl Cream. Although the Curl Soufflé smells sooo good (think cake batter), both products have the potential of drying out my hair so I use them sparingly. I also have a little spray bottle of water and olive oil to give my hair some moisture when needed.

What reaction did you get when you first decided to go natural?
My boyfriend hated it, lol! I didn't care though because I loved it and my friends and family did as well. I just felt like my life became that much easier. Plus, I've always wanted to experiment with color so that made it a little easier to do.

Did you BC or transition, if so when or for how long?
I BC'd gradually, if that makes any sense. I'm always interested in new hairstyles, especially cuts, and my philosophy is "it's just hair, it'll grow back". So, I initially cut around the sides and back of my head and just had long hair on top. I hadn't gotten a perm for a while now so I had a pretty good length for a cute TWA. About a couple of weeks after I cut the sides and back of my hair off, I went and did the top. All of this happened between October and November of 2010.

What makes you love your kinks, curls and coils?
I LOVE my kinks, curls, and coils because not only do they make me stand out in a club full of hair extensions and weave glue, but they actually make me feel better in my skin. Plus, they help me exercise my individuality and artsiness. Each curl accentuates the next just as each underlying skin tone compliments the other.

Where can we find you on the web?

Captured Curls: Javania

Ladies meet Javania! I came across this natural hair beauty and her awesome hair via Twitter a couple of weeks ago. Once I clicked her avi picture and saw her hair I had to have her featured so I quickly shot her a DM to see if she was interested, she was!
I liked reading her about her journey and I'm sure you will too! Click the jump to read Javania's story.

1.        Please, introduce yourself!

Hello gorgeous people!! My name is Javania M Webb and I am a fabulous woman coming into her own. I have my own business mentoring and speaking to women about empowerment, self-esteem/self-worth among other things.  I also work at a mental health agency in the crisis department helping people not commit suicide or homicide. I am also a Graduate Student studying “Non-Profit Administration” and have big plans for this master’s degree that I did not want to continue halfway through, but nonetheless I will be done May 2012.

2.      What is your current hair care regimen?

I have my hair in mini-twists for the summer, I live in St. Louis and it is too hot to do my hair and put the extra heat on it.  During the other seasons, I wash my hair bi-weekly.  Before I wash I detangle with conditioner, then wash, then deep condition (suave conditioner with honey) after detangling again and either sit under the dryer for 30 minutes or keep it on for a hour or so, then rinse, towel dry, blow out in low heat with CHI silk infusion, then use hemp seed butter to twist.

3.      What is your hair type and what works best for your texture?

I love big hair, my hair is really tight with out blowing it out and I do not know the number, do not pay attention to that.  I am on a strict budget so I try different shampoos and conditioner that fit my money at the time.  I have tried shampoo from Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, and Sally’s.  But the best is suave conditioner with honey.  Aphogee works well with my hair also.

4.      What reaction did you get when you first decided to go natural?

Not good. I went natural twice.  The first time I was transitioning but I got upset and one day went to my hair stylist and cut it all off and had a fade. Everyone hated it, I even had one “friend” talk me into getting a relaxer, which is why I went back to the creamy crack, and I hate that I listened.  I did not get another relaxer after I was talked into it.

5.      Did you BC or transition, if so when or for how long?

I transitioned for six months the second time around I decided to go natural and then did the big chop because I was tired of the two textures. Now everyone loves my hair, but there are some who are still negative and I can care less. This is my head and my life!!

6.      What makes you love your kinks, curls and coils?

I love how my hair frames my face, I love how big my hair gets, I love how my hair is unique in it’s own right.

Captured Curls: Jenna

Everyone meet Jenna! I came across Jenna and her awesome hair via Twitter earlier this week. I had to have her and her gorgeous mane featured so I quickly shot her a DM to get the ball rolling! I liked reading her about her journey and I'm sure you will too! Click the jump for Jenna's lovely feature.

1.Please, introduce yourself!

Hi my name is Jenna. I am a 26 year old grad student pursuing my M.A.T.  in Special Education.

2.What is your current hair care regimen?

I really try to keep it simple.

As far as products:
Shampoo: Dr Bronners Peppermint Castile Soap
Dr. Bronners Tea Tree Castile Soap
Conditioner: Yes To Carrots or Yes to Cucumbers
Deep Conditioner: ORS Replenishing Pack mixed with a little extra virgin olive oil
Gels: Aloe Vera Gel
Oils: Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Coconut Oil (in the summer), and Jamaican Black Castor Oil (I mostly put this on my edges every few days)
Leave In/ Daily Moisturizer: Sheamoisture Leave in Conditioner
Daily Spritz: A mix of water and aloe vera gel or juice
Detangling Spritz: A mix of water and V0 5 conditioner

As for my regime:

I detangle /wash/condition/deep condition my hair every 2-3 weeks.
After I do that I  two strand twist my hair and do different two strand styles for about a week or so then once they start looking not so fab I take them out and rock different twist out styles until its time for wash day.

3.What is your hair type and what works best for your texture?

I really haven’t gotten into hair typing but I’d say a 4b (I think!) What works best for me is definitely making sure I keep my hair moisturized on a daily basis and also keeping in mind that everyone’s hair is different. What may work for some may not work for me and that okay. =)

4.What reaction did you get when you first decided to go natural?

When I first decided to go natural in general my family and friends were supportive. Of course they asked me questions like “Why” and “What made me decide this” but once they saw that this was something I really wanted to do they gave me nothing but support. Fast forward to now and my family loves it and some of my friends have even decided to go natural themselves. =)

5. Did you BC or transition, if so when or for how long?
I did my BC in June of 2008 after transitioning for 6 months. I couldn’t do it any longer. I got so tired of the two textures I woke up one morning and was like “This has got to go!”

6. What makes you love your kinks, curls and coils?

The versatility...I can blow it out and straighten, twist it up, braid it up, wear it out, big, and curly, or in a simple but always cute puff. There are just so many styling options out there to experiment with when it comes to natural hair and that is what’s so beautiful about it.

Be patient and enjoy the journey with both your hair and in life! =)

Captured Curls:Tina

Today's Captured Curls feature has beautiful locs! Read her story below.

Tell us a little about yourself

My name is Christina Yates. I prefer Tina. In addition to being a proud full-time mommy, I am a full-time college student studying Early Childhood/Special Education. Ultimately, my goal is to obtain my masters in Cali and open up a 24-hour daycare. In the meantime, in between time, I work full time in retail, as a customer service representative. One question my customers ask frequently is, "Why don't you play around with modeling?" For a while, I would give them all some random long drawn out response about me not being interested. I'm beginning to believe now, however, that I just never really thought about it!

What made you decide to grow your locs?

The reason I decided to grow my locs the Summer of 2007 is because I was a dedicated athlete who knew absolutely nothing about hair and figured locs would require the least maintenance. For the first or second year of my loc'ing process, I would literally just wake up and go on about my day. And yes, I LOVED IT. I cut all my hair off to start from 'scratch', and loved my gel twists the very second they were in my head. At this particular time, I was unaware of right and wrong in terms of product efficiency, so I was using bees-wax, mango-lime products, and several other products I probably wouldn't recommend now. Make no mistake, I still don't consider myself a 'loc guru' or anything, but over the course of time, I have developed a preference on hair products. In addition, my thought process has changed in regards to locs requiring the least maintenance as well.

What do you do to maintain your locs?

As far as maintenance goes, I am ashamed to say that I really do the bare minimum to my hair. I get them washed and re-twisted every 4-6 weeks. Every now and again I moisturize my locs with Organics Shea Butter or Carrot Oil. I wash and condition my hair with Cantu Moisturizing Cream Shampoo and Rinse out conditioner as well. One thing I CAN pat myself on the back for is tying my hair down with a scarf each and EVERY single night. I also spray my locs with Olive Oil Sheen Spray. But like I mentioned before, I do these remedies infrequently. I've gotten in the habit of going to a loctician for the maintenance because I'm.. how do I say it... well...  LAZY.

What do you think about men with locs and what do they think about you and yours?

Men with Locs? I adore the men who take care of their locs more than I do. lol. Double-standards, I tell ya. But honestly, I love men with well maintained and styled locs. I must admit, I am also a fan of caucasian men with locs. And men love my locs just as much as I do. Maybe even more than I do!!

What made you decide that you wanted to grow locs?

Are there any advantages and/or disadvantages with growing having your hair loc’d?

I would say the ultimate benefit to having locs is obtaining the courage and confidence to be yourself and do what is that you want to do with your hair! Each stage of the growth process was nothing but love for me. The disadvantage..? I would say seeing someone else with locs that look slightly better than your own. lol. (REALLY THOUGH.)

Do you have any advice for those who are considering embarking on a loc journey?

To those who are considering loc'ing their hair, my advice to you is DO IT! Do not second guess, or stress over the stages your dread experiencing. As I mentioned before, each stage will definitely be appreciated as the time progresses. That is in fact, the beauty of locs. It's funny because one of the happiest times of my life was when I was pregnant in 2008. I was treated like a Queen. Didn't have to wait in line for the restrooms. Ate all day every day. And I had the mother-to-be glow. As I look back at the pictures during that time, my locs were short, and blonde, and probably the prettiest they could ever be. (Excuse me while I reach for my Kleenex....although I should be greasing my scalp.)  Needless to say, I am such a fan of locs. To me, they are more than a hairstyle, but somewhat of a lifestyle. Forgive my cliche!

Captured Curls: Latoya

Everyone, meet Latoya! This new natural and new mommy contacted me via email with her great natural hair story, enjoy and read below!

Tell me about YOU
My name is Latoya. I’m a 28 year old, new mom of a two month old. I work in higher education as an Undergraduate Services Coordinator. In my free time I dance and blog.

What is your current hair care regimen?
As the mom of a newborn, I try to keep my regimen pretty simple.  I wash and deep condition my hair every 1-2 weeks.  My signature style right now is a braid out or twist out.  I clarify when there is a lot of build-up and once a month I do a bentonite clay treatment.

What is your hair type and what works best for your texture?
My hair is 4a/4b with low porosity, medium/thick strands, course, dense, with 75% shrinkage.  I have a tighter curl pattern on the sides and back. The top of my hair has a looser curl pattern. It is best for me to keep my hair stretched to avoid tangling and knots. (Wash and gos are not an option for me!)  My hair loves shea butter, coconut oil, and jojoba oil.  My favorite products are: Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, Avalon Organics Peppermint Shampoo, Giovanni Direct Leave-in, and Olive Oil Replenishing Conditioner.

What reaction did you get when you first decided to go natural?
My family has made jokes in fun, but they are very supportive. I used to be sensitive about the jokes, but now that I’m very comfortable with my hair I think their jokes are hilarious. (Confidence goes a long way!)My sister has been my biggest supporter. She is the one that introduced me to the online hair community. She continues to be my cheerleader throughout my natural hair journey.

Did you BC or transition, if so when or for how long?
I was a short term transitioner (5 ½ months). My last relaxer was April 26, 2010 when I decided to cut my hair into a Rihanna cut. I big chopped on Saturday, October 16, 2010 on a whim. After work, I called my hairdresser and headed straight to the salon. I had no choice but to be a short term transitioner, because I had cut my hair so short. My natural hair took over and the scraggly relaxed ends had to go. (I’d been randomly cutting parts of my hair –first the back then the sides. I realized it was time to go see a professional.)

What makes you love your kinks, curls and coils?
I love the versatility of my hair.  I no longer feel the need to cut my hair to get a new look. I also love the fact that I am no longer putting harsh relaxers on my sensitive scalp.

Captured Curls: Yhanni and Jeffrina

I am very excited to share this weeks Captured Curls with you all! Today you will be reading about how two sisters care for their natural hair, loc'd and loose. The photo below may be familiar to you all if you have Tumblr. The picture happened to land on my dashboard a few weeks ago and I immediately fell IN LOVE with it. One of the sisters (Yhanni, with the locs) ironically started following me on Twitter. I had NO CLUE that she was one of the women in the picture. She tweeted me the picture a few days ago and I almost died, LOL. I had to have them on the blog and I just knew you all would love this post. Read their stories below!

Tell me about YOU
Yhanni: I'm a singer, dancer, actress (but who in LA isn't). Brooklyn, King's County, NY born, Herndon, VA raised, LA, CA living.
Jeffrina: I'm a singer/songwriter, actress, dancer, and mother. Born in New Jersey, raised between NJ, PA, and CA. I now live in Los Angeles and love love love it!

Tell me your hair care regimen (do you use heat, natural products, ect...)
Y: I wash my hair once a week or once every two weeks. I have a lot of hair and it gets dry quickly so I wash it whenever my scalp starts crying.
Jeffrina: I wash my hair every 2-3 days to keep the curls soft and fresh, otherwise they get frizzy and matted. I towel dry it then massage it with hair products while finger twisting my curls.

Tell me your texture and what works best on your hair type
Y: I twist my locs with this tea tree oil product that has a gel-like texture. I moisturize it with Carol's Daughter tiu hair oil, Jamaican Mango and Lime Spray oil and 'Nature's Blessings hair pomade'.
Jeffrina: My hair texture is thick and bushy with tight curls. Mango and Shea butter cream along with Coconut oil are great for moisture and shine. Once it's moisturized, I finger twist the curls with black gel to keep them tight and avoid frizziness.

Tell me the reaction you got when first going natural
Y: I've been natural my whole life.
Jeffrina: Everyone loved it and I felt so free not having to worry about how my hair looked all the time.

Did you BC or transition, if so when or for how long?
Y: N/A
Jeffrina: I transitioned first I cut my hair really short but I still had a relaxer and my hair was straight. Then one day I got sick of the maintenance and just chopped it all the way down til the relaxer was gone and I haven't turned back since. That was about a year and a half ago.

What makes you love your kinks, curls and coils?
Y: Unlike the India Arie song (Love you girl!) I am my hair. My locs are a big part of me, they have to be since it's the only hair style I've known.
Jeffrina: I have had every hairstyle in the book, and never have I felt so free or so confident til' I went natural. I can get up slap some moisture on my hair and keep it moving while still feeling good about myself.

Where can we find you on the web?

Anything EXTRA you want us to know?
Y: My birthday is on Tuesday.. hheeeyyy!
Jeffrina: I truly think its amazing you are doing this. It is so important for women of color to love ourselves the way we were born. Not that I have anything against weaves, perms or anything else but I didn't even know the natural texture of my hair until a year and a half ago. Maybe if i would have known I would have loved it way before!

Captured Curls: Cimone (A UK Curly)

Today's Captured Curls is Cimone! Her hair is beautiful and I think that you all will enjoy her natural hair story!
See below...

Tell me about YOU
My name is Cimone. I am a Natural Hair Enthusiast and UK Natural Hair blogger. I am also a Primary School Teacher in London, UK.
Tell me your hair care regimen (do you use heat, natural products, ect...)
I very rarely use heat. I only blow-dry my hair before putting in extensions or weave as protective styles-so far this year only once. I haven’t used hair straighteners in about 20 months.
I use a hair bonnet which attaches to my hair dryer, once a week when I deep condition. My ‘Staple Products’ at the moment:
·         Aubrey Organics GPB Glyclogen Protein Shampoo-Rosemary & Peppermint
·         Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose Conditioner
·         Eco-Styler Gel (although our love affair is on the rocks at the moment-we are on a ‘break’!)
·         Coconut Oil, Rosemary Oil, Amla Oil, Jojoba Oil and Glycerine

In regards to my regime, It’s quite simple at the moment:-
I detangle with Herbal Essence Hello Hydration Moisturising Conditioner and put my hair in large twists. I then co-wash or wash with either of the Aubrey products. I haven’t yet found a staple leave-in, but I seem to always revert back to Organics Root Stimulator Olive Oil Replenishing Conditioner. Although I would like to find a more ‘natural’ deep conditioner-so any suggestions of products available in the UK would be greatly received! I twist again slightly smaller and let hair-dry in preparation for a puff or protective style.

I have also recently tried the TRESemme Naturals range-my hair seems to love it, but will have to use it a few more time before it becomes a ‘staple’.

Tell me your texture and what works best on your hair type
Hmm I’m not 100% sure! What I do know is that my hair is not the same all over. For example the back of my head is very soft and needs practically no product but it still ‘behaves’. My sides are very coily and need a lot of manipulation to do what I want. I have some real straight sections, and then the front is very wavy, but needs a soft touch as it easily breaks. A real combination!

Tell me the reaction you got when first going natural
Well I’m a lifelong natural! Although I must admit not a life-long lover of my hair.
I have put it through real hell over the years-with over use of the pressing comb and just real lack of understanding of my hairs needs. When I stopped wearing weaves majority of people were like ‘why did you wear weaves in the 1st place?’ which was encouraging! Some guys did comment that I should relax it-but I had already met my fiancée who loved it so their opinions were null and void!
Through research and trial and error I have began to understand and love my curls!

What makes you love your kinks, curls and coils?
That my hair is SO versatile! I don’t stress about the rain at all (which in the UK is a regular occurrence!). That my hair seems to intrigue people-despite it being natural it is still deemed as an ‘unnatural’ and ‘unusual’ sight. My hair has inspired friends to become natural-which is fantastic. Above all though, that I am a role model for the little girls I teach-They see someone who doesn’t have relaxed hair, and understand that just because I can’t ‘flick’ it-doesn’t mean I can’t ‘rock it’ J.

Where can we find you on the web?
You can find me at my all new blog http://SpeltWithaC.blogspot.com --- UK blog for UK Naturals.... 'SpeltWithaC-Flying the flag for the UK Natural Scene'  :-)

Anything EXTRA you want us to know?
That to fully understanding your natural hair takes time and patience-it definitely isn’t one size fits all, but that’s the fun and great thing about natural hair it’s unique!

Captured Curls: Rachel Stewart

Many of you are familiar with the GORGEOUS Rachel of Rachel Stewart Jewelry.
I was finally able to catch up with her for a feature and
this is by far one of my favorite interviews. See below for her story and fabulous pictures.

Rachel, I am a huge fan of yours! Thank you for agreeing to be featured on my blog. Can you give us a little background on yourself and amazing jewelry line?

I’m 38, a mom and homemaker, I started my jewelry line 3 years ago after being laid off from my job, I decided I didn’t want to go back in to the workforce and I began making and selling my jewelry from my blog TARGET QUEEN….

For those of us who have seen your gorgeous head of hair, we LOVE IT. Can you share your hair care regimen and products that you use?

Well, in February I did another big chop so the hair is GONE!...I normally shave my head every few years, it’s my favorite hairstyle and I always seem to go back to it around the 2 year mark…I always promise myself I’ll get to bra strap length before I cut it BUT I just can’t seem to make it that long…when I had hair I NEVER used shampoo, I condition washed only and used the same conditioner as a leave in, I believe buying a separate leave in conditioner is nonsense, it’s the same as your conditioner but maybe watered down or scented and packaged differently…I challenge anyone to skip leave ins and use your regular conditioner after shampooing or condition washing.
After 20 years of being natural I found that only one product worked best for me and that was my conditioner, I used garnier fructis triple nutrition deep conditioner as a shampoo AND leave in, I also did ACV rinses as needed, that was it for me!

3.       I read on Naturally Obsessed that you often shave your head after letting it grow out for a few years, I think that is amazing! How long have you been natural and what makes you want to shave your head?

Well as I mentioned earlier, I’ve been natural over 20 years and I just always seems to get to the same point after 2 years when I just NEED a change, plus the shaved head is my favorite style..so it’s not a big issue for me to shave it…long hair isn’t the only option for me..I love it long but short hair fits my lifestyle and personality even more.

Many of us are familiar with your jewelry line, how did you get started with making and designing jewelry?

I started a fashion and lifestyle blog about 3 years ago…after losing my job I decided to try my hand at making earrings and headbands and see if I could make some extra money…it just took off from there and since then my business has grown.

Your pieces are very unique, what inspires you when creating a new addition for the line?

I’m an 80’s and 90’s baby and I’m just stuck in that time…I like earrings that are big and bold like the ones I grew up wearing and seeing my mother wear, I just try to create things that are fresh, unique and eye catching…my earrings aren’t for the wallflowers.

What advice do you have for new naturals and business women looking to venture out in becoming entrepreneurs?

It’s not as hard as you think to get started, you don’t need an expensive website..blogs are free, paypal is free, all you need is a camera and a product..don’t hesitate, you don’t need a physical building or a bank loan to have a business anymore…just do it!

What makes you love your kinks, curls and coils?

How can I NOT love what the creator gave me?  He knew what he was doing when he made our hair!

Where can we find you on the web?
